Jon Wilks is an acclaimed fingerpicking guitarist and singer of traditional folk songs and broadside ballads from the English repertoire.
His background as a journalist (a former editor of Time Out magazine and contributor to Dazed & Confused, The Guardian and other publications) means that he has a great eye and ear for a story, and this shows in his live shows – an amusing mix of folk song performance and storytelling. He throws in weird and wonderful tidbits about the original singers and collectors that he has unearthed during his substantial writing and podcasting research on traditional folk music in the UK, and his performance is often described as both entertaining and informative.
To date, Jon has recorded four full-length folk albums and one EP. He has also co-arranged and performed tracks on Jackie Oates’s Gracious Wings album.
NEW ALBUM
BEFORE I KNEW WHAT HAD BEGUN I HAD ALREADY LOST
Self Release – Out 5 May 2023
With his fourth solo album, Jon takes a step away from the Birmingham songs that brought him recognition on his two previous collections and instead focuses on the songs that have moved him most over the last few, difficult years. Still heavily focused on lesser-known traditional songs, the acclaimed guitarist and singer includes three compositions of his own and brings together a collection of musicians that he has grown to love playing with.
‘The sort of performer folk circles mean when they talk of the living tradition. Jon’s passion informs his live shows, the songs liberally sprinkled with anecdotes, humour and history, his singing and personality hugely engaging.’

‘Beautiful, delicate with love and loss.’
The Guardian
‘Up The Cut is a beautiful album. Affecting, simple guitar, exquisitely accompanied by Wilks’ authentic, honest voice. A raw, but entirely seductive, performance. One for all lovers of traditional songs delivered with minimal frills.’

Gnoss’ signature sound is a rich tapestry of acoustic layers; outstanding
musicianship, deep traditional roots and contemporary compositional flair
combine to create songs and tunes brimming with character.
Triple Scots Trad Music Awards nominees, the band have built an invested
following through their forward-thinking take on traditional music and the
unique warmth of their live shows. This has been proven through three
consecutive sellout appearances at Glasgow’s world-famous Celtic
Connections festival.
Their 2019 release, Drawn From Deep Water was met with widespread
praise (“a refreshing blast” - RnR) for its exemplary interplay, nakedly
emotional playing, and well chosen material. The 11-track album brought
Gnoss to entranced audiences across France, Italy and Denmark, not to
mention the length and breadth of the UK.
Their follow up album, The Light of The Moon continued to demonstrate
Gnoss’ dedication to their craft that places them firmly at the fore of what’s
happening in Scottish folk and earned them a nomination for Album of the
Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards. Described as “an invigorating new
direction for the Gnoss boys” by Songlines, this album took Gnoss’ online
fanbase by storm gaining over one million streams in 2022.
With the release of their third album, 2023’s Stretching Skyward, Gnoss
reignite their collaboration with producer and engineer, Scott Wood
(Skerryvore), further exploring their acoustic roots whilst incorporating new,
electronic elements. Launch dates include performances across the UK and
Europe, including standout appearances at the Orkney Folk Festival,
Cambridge Folk Festival, Towersey Festival and Denmark’s Tønder Festival.

Kris Drever Harmonic Alchemist
Kris Drever originally comes from Hrossey in the Orkney Islands. Over the years, he has taught himself to be a songwriter, guitarist and singer of note (and sometimes many notes).
As well as creating award-winning original songs and instrumental pieces with the trio Lau, he has had a fruitful solo career exploring the cracks between classic and modern songwriting and the traditional music that he comes from.
Drever’s sound is rooted in the earthy and hypnotic rhythms of much older music, but there’s a sophistication to both the lyricism and the instrumentalism which places him skilfully in the present.
He has an extensive collection of BBCR2 Folk awards, plus a fistful of Scottish NaTrads awards for everything from best album, best singer and best live act to best original song.
He has worked with many excellent musicians, including Jack Bruce, Eddi Reader, Mark Knopfler, Jerry Douglas and Roddy Woomble, and is a member of the beautiful multi-media project Spell Songs: The Lost Words.
Currently, Kris is preparing for a series of Lau events around the UK, writing music for a new solo album and learning some old tunes for reasons he can’t quite explain.
